St. Jude Thadeus Society

With joy and love, we introduce to you one of the pious Societies of the Catholic Church; St. Jude’s Society, Mater Misericordia Catholic Church, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

St. Jude Thaddeus, our Patron Saint was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. According to Sacred tradition, he was a near relative (cousin) of Jesus, and as a child, was a playmate of the God-man.

Confusion of the names of St. Jude, and the traitor Judas, to a large extent discouraged devotion to the saint for many centuries, although there is evidence that this devotion was held in high esteem during the Middle Ages.

Today, more than ever before, the virtue of Jude Thaddeus is being revived in people’s minds and hearts. In return, he is proving himself to be more than an ordinary advocate, taking special delight in coming to the aid of persons in despair and in desperate need. No petition seems too great for him.

He died a Martyr.

As members of St. Jude Society, we join hands and hearts in prayer for our individual and collective needs through our Solemn Novena Prayers.

• Mission and Vision: 1. To propagate and promote devotion in honor of St. Jude Thaddeus in the Parish, Diocese and throughout the world. 2. To work with the universal church in evangelization.

3. To promote the spiritual progress and apostolic spirit of the members.

4. To encourage vocation to priesthood and religious life.

• Activities: Essentially as outlined in the seven spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

• Membership: Membership is open to all practicing Catholics, irrespective of age.

• Meeting Days & Schedule of Events:

A. Prayer Meetings: Every Wednesday at 5pm in front of the Church.

B. Novena Devotions: The society observes six (6) novenas annually and others as may be approved by the national council.

1. January: 1st - 9th (New Year)

2. March: Lenten Novena

3. May: Pentecost (Holy Spirit) Novena

4. July: Sts. Joachim and Anne Novena

5. September: Our Lady of Sorrows

6. October: 19th – 27th, Feast of St. Jude:
